This Week in Mommyhood

Cati turned eleven months old this week. My baby is inching closer toward becoming a toddler. Bittersweet is the best word to describe how I felt on January 14th.
IMG_8840
Alex has been off this week so Cati has gotten a lot of father-daughter time. It's beautiful to see these two together and every time I see how loving and tender Alex is with Cati I am reminded of why I picked Alex to spend and create a life with.
IMG_8656
Cati's little milestones continue to astonish me. I have given her a straw to play with before but this week I actually tried to get her to drink using a straw. It's amazing how quickly she figured it out. Needless to say, I love her little puckering face as she drinks from the straw.
IMG_8796
Cati is even more of a chatterbox and she loves to do "Little Indian." On one particular car ride Alex and I were hunched over because our stomachs hurt so much from laughing at all the noises Cati makes. I had the camera with me so I was able to catch her in all her glory:
If you noticed from the video, Cati is now forward facing in the car! I turned the seat around this week because I had to adjust the straps and figured our car rides might be more enjoyable if she can actually see me. Sure enough, car rides have become more fun all around. There's something so big and grown up about looking to the back seat and seeing my daughter facing me.
IMG_8626
Eating sucks big time this week. It sucks so much that my temper has been seriously tested and I've had to walk away. I know it's because of that nasty little tooth who refuses to break through but it's frustrating to see all food either get rejected or end up on the floor or in the hair. Cati is great and normal at every other moment but mealtime is a horror. I remarked this week that at the rate Cati's getting teeth she'll be teething until she's 12.
IMG_8611
On a positive note, walking is improving. Cati has perfected turning and she is capable of walking longer distances. It's adorable to see her walk from one room to another; she looks so tiny against all the grown-up/big people things. She is such a little person and she walks around the house like she knows exactly what she's doing and where she's going.
IMG_8854
Cati's birthday is in 28 days which means her party is in 26 days. I have 28 more days to relish in the babyhood stage.

Double Duty Stroller

IMG_8647
Our stroller is not only capable of transporting Cati around but also of being pushed around by Cati. Whenever Cati is out of the stroller she throws a bit of a fit because she wants to push it. We have gotten the strangest of looks from people because of how funny it must look to be carrying Cati while she pushes the stroller. Yesterday she one upped that. We were at the playground yesterday and Cati could care less about the swings and slides. She wanted to push the stroller and actually walk with it. I have two videos of her pushing the stroller and both are equally great but this one is just a tiny bit funnier.

Banana Ricotta Muffins

Banana-Ricotta Muffins
One of the things I love about baking is its use of ingredients that have passed the normal eating stage. A prime example of this is bananas. I love them and Cati adores them but there is always one or two bananas that go beyond the point of eating with enjoyment. These bananas are too ripe and mushy to eat but just right for baking. I usually make a banana bread but I came across this recipe for Banana-Ricotta Muffins and thought they would be perfect for breakfast. The muffins were delicious and addictive. The ricotta makes the muffins really light and moist. I think I just might want to add ricotta to every banana thing I bake from now on.
Banana-Ricotta Muffins

Banana-Ricotta Muffins
Source: Adapted from The Chubby Vegetarian
Makes about 18 muffins

2 large bananas, mashed
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup ricotta cheese
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 tbsp. vanilla
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
3-4 Tbsp raw sugar for sprinkling

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a cupcake/muffin pan with liners.

In a large bowl mash the bananas. Add the milk, ricotta cheese, canola oil, vanilla, and sugars. Combine using a hand mixer.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the banana mixture and combine until well mixed. Stir in walnuts.

Pour batter into cupcake/muffin pan. Sprinkle each muffin with raw sugar. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the pan.

Serve and enjoy!

Eleven Months.

IMG_8834
You get better and better with each passing month. Although I am sad about how quickly the months are passing, my sadness is diminished by how amazing you become the older you get.  This past month was particularly special because I really started seeing you as a human in miniature. You were no longer just the baby; you were just like me but a third of the size and without the vocabulary.
IMG_8359
You have the funniest sense of humor and find everything amusing and interesting. You make us laugh with your giggles that don't seem to match the sweet and high pitch of your voice. I'll never forget the fit of giggles I put you in just by saying "squeak" or the way you squeal and smile every time you see Perla.
IMG_8626
You started walking this month and I think that's what set off my "human in miniature" thought process. You are so tiny and yet so big. Not even a year old and you are a walking little person whose growing independence at times feels like a stab to the heart. I love to hold your hand and walk with you; the feel of your little hand nestled in mine and of your body rocking back and forth as you take steps is something I never want to forget.
IMG_8535
With the onset of walking I feel like you have become more independent. You have always been good at playing by yourself and keeping yourself entertained but walking has opened up your world. I try to sit and play with you but as soon as I'm at your level everything fades as you throw yourself at me and proceed to either climb on me or pick and point at anything covering my body (your favorites are my earrings, necklace, hair, and, ironically, my boobs).
IMG_8721
I feel like the first ten months of your life were spent fattening up and the last month was spent lengthening up. You still have rolls but they aren't as numerous. You are stretching out all over and everything looks so much bigger. I can hardly remember what you looked like as a newborn. Or rather, the truth is I can hardly believe you were ever that small.
IMG_8465
One tooth broke out this month. So much for teeth coming in pairs and in quick procession. The beginning of the month was spent with the tooth making its full appearance and the end of the month was spent waiting for the stubborn second tooth to break out.
IMG_8491
What makes teething really annoying with you has nothing to do with a differing sleeping pattern at night or a grumpy personality, it has to do with your solid feedings. You drink your milk just fine but getting you to eat anything is a struggle. You literally go on a hunger strike and either refuse to eat anything at all or only eat things that I'm assuming feel really good on your aching gum. I wish there was something I could do to make you feel better but it seems like we just need to ride the teething out.
IMG_8656
Because teething has put quite a damper on feeding you, we haven't made much headway in the new foods department. I think the only new things you tried this month were beef, fish, and broccoli. Other than that I have been giving you new combinations of the foods you've already tried, more finger foods, more snack foods, and more table food. While I still make all your food I am beginning to enjoy the freedom that comes with not having to prepare you something completely separate from what we eat. So it seems that while I have not introduced many new foods to you this month, I have introduced enough variety of food to you before that you are fully capable of partaking in our meals.
IMG_8604
You amaze me every second of every minute of every day. You are beautiful, lovely, sweet, affectionate, and you have my temperament to boot (cute as a baby, probably not going to be cute as a teenager). You have a tooth, you walk, talk, smile, giggle, throw tantrums, and feel hurt when we tell you no. You fit perfectly into our world and my hope is too make our world good enough for the perfection that is you.

Home Improvement

I apologize for the lack of food posts lately. Alex is on vacation this week and, although we are here in Miami, I feel like we are vacationing outside of the city. Our days are full and I am beyond exhausted by the end of the day. We are definitely getting a lot done around here and spending some much needed family time together. One thing I can always count on when Alex has time off is getting things done around the house that make the house feel more homey. Every time we put something up on the walls I feel like the house is becoming more and more alive and like it is reflecting us more. One of the things we did was put up our mirror and silhouette prints. Alex had been dying to get a sunburst-style mirror and I had been dying to get silhouette prints of all of us. We both got what we wanted over Christmas and the mirror and prints went up in our bedroom over our dresser. I love the way it looks. Here are the prints from Etsy seller Personal Touches (I highly recommended working with Vanessa):
Alejandro
Stephanie
Catarina

Here is our new and improved wall with space left for the future child's silhouette print. For now, I am going to get a print of Perla done to fill in the wall under Cati's silhouette:
IMG_8766

One thing we both realized is that while we love the color of our room (it's a light green), the color is just right for making everything else in the room look green. You can see what I mean when you look at the prints above and then when you look at the prints on the wall; the prints have gone from cream to green. Still looks cool though.

Birthday DIY: Ballerina Wreath

A couple of weeks ago I had a "I need to get things done NOW" moment. In that moment I worked on several little projects for the baby's birthday party. One of the things I wanted to do was a tutu wreath for the front door. I used this tutorial on How to Make Tulle Pom Poms from Homemade Gift Ideas.

I used 12" wreath and it took 4 yards of ribbon to get it fully wrapped.
IMG_8297

You start with the pom pom.
IMG_8304

Holding it in the center, you fold the edges down.
IMG_8301

Until it looks like this. The other side will look like a tulle rosette.
IMG_8299

Then, using a hot glue gun, you put glue on the bottom of the tulle rosette and attach to the wreath. Continue this until you get the desired coverage.
IMG_8306

In total, I used up 27 tulle pom poms the size of my Apple wireless mouse. The wreath would have obviously required more if I covered more but I only wanted to cover the top part.
IMG_8308

This is the wreath with a bow glued on.
IMG_8307

I couldn't decide whether I wanted to leave the wreath plain or add something to it. I found this "Ballerina" sticker at Michael's and bought it as something to potentially add to the wreath. I let Alex decide which he liked best and he voted for the addition of the ballerina sticker. So here's the final wreath:
IMG_8316

All in all, this project cost me less than $10. The tulle was bought from Linentablecloths on Ebay, the wreath and ribbon were 25% off at Michael's, and the sticker was buy one, get one free at Michael's as well.

This Week in Mommyhood

Cati's first birthday is in 35 days. Each day I turn into more and more of a sentimental mess. It's kind of like having all those emotions right after giving birth but this time there are no weird hormonal shifts going on in my body. It's just me trying to deal with the mixture of happy (my baby's going to be a toddler!) and sad (oh no, my baby's growing up) emotions. I fully expect to cry on both the days of her party and her actual birthday.
IMG_8671
I don't know why it took my so long but Cati tried beef this week. Steak to be exact. I seasoned it with a little bit of salt and pepper and cooked it in olive oil and garlic. I thought the steak was yummy and so did Cati. Lately, I have been giving her all her meats in chunks so that she can feed herself; I'll give her the veggies and everything else is put on the tray for her to get with her hands.
IMG_8565
The drawback to this approach to feeding is that Cati loves to put the food in her hair and she loves to drop the food over the seat. The over the seat thing doesn't bother me because we have a mini vacuum cleaner in the shape of Perla but the food in the hair thing does because Cati's hair gets all pasty and gross. I can tell you now, if you are ever in need of gel but don't have any, just use a banana. I promise bananas are just as good and it smells wonderful.
IMG_8573
For the first time this week I noticed Cati pointing. I don't think I have ever noticed her pointing at anything. Reaching for and grabbing, yes. But pointing, no. We were at Pet Supermarket and she was so fascinated by the gerbils that she pointed at them. It's little things like this that remind me of Cati's blooming personhood.
IMG_8658
Teething. I can't say that I hate you because you haven't made Cati unbearable but I don't like how you make mealtime so un-enjoyable for my little girl. Cati barely eats when she's teething and you can tell that she's really hungry but too uncomfortable to actually eat. The little tooth is right there under the gum (it's the other bottom middle one) but it hasn't made it's appearance yet. I thought the little tooth make its appearance sooner but her teeth are taking their sweet time.
IMG_8606
Walking is getting so much better.  She's getting more comfortable in her shoes and actually chooses to walk more than crawl at times, even if crawling is faster. She's almost running too! The only thing that stops her from actually being able to run is how excited she gets; she'll get so excited that she loses her balance and falls into a crawl. My favorite activity of the day has been walking hand-in-hand with her.
IMG_8596
We got a new lovie this week. One of Alex's patients had advised us to get an identical lovie just in case something happens to her current lovie because when she went to buy a replacement lovie for her child the replacement could only be found on eBay for $200. Luckily, the identical lovie didn't cost $200 but it sure was hard to track down.
IMG_8653
Perla got a haircut this week and Cati has been fascinated by her. It's as if we got a new dog. Cati follows Perla around and constantly wants to pet and be with her. It's the cutest thing ever.

My baby is growing up. Where did time go?
